Educating our young ones on healthy eating is an important part of the daily routine at Banana Moon Moseley and can be done in a variety of ways to make playtime educational as well as fun.
Healthy eating is about giving children the opportunity to know what healthy foods are, even at this young age. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. Food play activities can be so much fun and provide a sensory experience for the child.
Children love to paint and print using fruit and vegetables, creating different shapes on the paper. This can also be an opportunity to talk about the colour of the food item, whether it is a fruit or vegetable and what shapes it is making when printed on paper.
Not only is cutting their own fruit and vegetables up at snack time a great opportunity to talk about what they are eating, but it is also the perfect way to help create further independence for the children and strengthen and enhance their fine motor skills by learning to use a knife safely, with confidence and giving them a sense of pride as they cut their own snacks up!
Another fun way of exploring healthy foods is through water play. Adding both whole and cut-up lemons is a great way of adding a twist of fun! The children can watch the lemons float and sink to the bottom of the water. They can squeeze the lemons and watch the juice flow out into the water. They can smell the glorious fresh smell they produce and taste the sour, sharp and refreshing taste that lemons give! Not to mention the wonderful vibrant colour.
